“The 2007 ‘DESIGN OSCAR’ goes to… the SOLICUT ABSOLUTE ML Knife Collection”

This is how the jury of the prestigious iF Product Design Awards described Solicut’s innovative Absolute ML knife collection.
With more entries than ever before, this year’s expert judging panel chose only 50 Gold Medal winners out of the 2,293 products submitted from 35 countries for this year’s awards. Receiving an IiF award is recognised as the ultimate international design achievement, and is known in the design trade as the Design Oscar. What makes Solicut’s award even more special is that there were only three Golden Medals awarded for design excellence in kitchen related products. Panel chairman, Fritz Frenkler, was impressed by the Absolute ML collection because he felt it was an outstanding marriage of substance and style. “Design is gradually regaining its rightful place,” he said, “because if a design’s not innovative, it’s not design – it’s styling. Absolute ML is technologically sophisticated with handles that feel good to the touch.” A creative merger of traditional German craftsmanship and modern design, these drop forged knives are made out of VG10 high-carbon, damascene multi-layered steel, which guarantees an outstanding, durable cutting performance. The Solicut Story Soligen Cutlery Company, or "Solicut" as the brand is known, is the third largest knife manufacturer in Soligen, Germany. Soligen is recognised universally, as the home of the finest steels in the World and also historically as the world Mecca of knife making. It is a city rish in detailed knowledge of knife making, as generations of workers have passed their skills on to their offspring. In 1948, 23-year-old Kurt Strater, father of Solicut’s present owner, founded a small knife- harpening factory in the backyard of his parents’ house. This operation quickly prospered and moved to full blown knife manufacturing. His son and successor Friedhelm continues his father’s vision of manufacturing high-end cutlery with particular emphasis on design.
Solicut is the new kid on the block and the recognised world challenger to the market dominance of Zwilling-Henckels and Wusthof-Trident in the forged professional knife market.
